How To Obtain a CAGE Code

A Commercial and Government Entity, or CAGE, code is a federal identification number for businesses that contract with the government. All companies that want to do business with the federal government must obtain a CAGE code. It is tied to a company profile that contains basic company information. The government provides CAGE codes after a business owner registers as a contractor on the System for Award Management (SAM). Typically the government will process a CAGE code application in three to five business days. The code is then mailed to the user within two weeks of assignment.

Step 1

To ensure a timely registration process, gather the appropriate documentation in advance. A business applying for a CAGE code will be required to provide the Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Tax ID number (TIN) as well as a Data Universal Numbering System number (DUNS). A business may obtain the EIN or TIN from the Internal Revenue Service website. (www.irs.gov). A DUNS number may be obtained from the Dun & Bradstreet website (www.dnb.com).

Step 2

Visit the System for Award Management (SAM) website (www.Sam.gov). Click the “Start New Registration” button.

Step 3

Enter your name, the company’s DUNS number, the Doing Business As (DBA) of your company and the address. Click “Continue Registration”.

Step 4

Proceed through each page of the application. Enter all required data including number of employees, business structure and the types of products or services offered. The company must also provide a North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code as well as the Federal Supply Classification and product service codes for products and services provided. The application will also request financial data, such as bank account number and Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) information so the agencies you contract with can send payments. Click the “Submit” button on the last page.
